Florida
Florida’s hurricane seasons are getting stronger, and preparation is key. Through the My Safe Florida Home (MSFH) program, eligible homeowners can receive a free wind-mitigation inspection and access up to $10,000 in matching grants to make critical improvements that protect their homes and lower insurance premiums.
At ALIGN Real Estate, we love helping Florida homeowners stay informed, protected, and empowered. From market trends to home improvement opportunities, we’re here to keep you in the know, and this month, we’re spotlighting a state program that could help you strengthen your home and save on insurance.
Here’s how Florida homeowners can take advantage of this valuable program in 2025.
Florida’s tropical climate brings high winds, flying debris, and unpredictable weather. By strengthening your roof, upgrading windows and doors, and reinforcing your structure, you can reduce storm damage and qualify for hurricane insurance discounts. The MSFH program helps you do both.
Every applicant begins with a free, state-authorized inspection by a licensed Florida wind-mitigation inspector. You’ll receive a detailed report that identifies vulnerabilities and recommends upgrades tailored to your property.
Your report not only shows you how to strengthen your home, it can also help confirm you’re receiving all available wind-mitigation credits from your insurer.
If your home qualifies, you may apply for a matching grant covering up to two-thirds of approved improvement costs, up to $10,000.
Eligible improvements include:
• Roof-to-wall connections and deck attachments
• Installation of a secondary water barrier
• Replacement of exterior doors, windows, and garage doors with impact-rated products
For homeowners who qualify as low-income, the state may cover 100% of approved project costs up to $10,000.
Once your improvements are complete, submit your inspection report and documentation to your insurer. Florida law requires insurance companies to offer discounts for homes with verified wind-mitigation features.
To be eligible, homeowners must:
• Own a site-built, single-family, detached home
• Use the home as their primary residence with a homestead exemption
• Have an insured dwelling value of $700,000 or less
• Have a home built before January 1, 2008
• Complete the free inspection before beginning any improvement work
Condos and mobile homes are not eligible under this program, though a separate pilot initiative for condominiums is underway.
