Dr. Phillips was named after Doctor Philip Phillips, who was once one of the world’s largest citrus growers. This area was made up of acres upon acres of Florida’s famous tangerine, grapefruit, and orange groves. In the 1940s, Phillips’ crop and business evolved so much that he had to hire a planner to create the community where his family and workers lived. Phillips ended up selling his citrus business to the now-famous Minute Maid Company in 1954. Soon after Mr. Walt Disney announced that he was planning to create the Walt Disney World Resort, Phillips revised his original community plan. In 1969, Dr. Phillips became the first master-planned community in Central Florida.
